Utah has hired DJ Gasso the program’s new assistant coach, the school announced on Wednesday.
Gasso takes the position vacated by program legend Hannah Flippen. Gasso spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma, serving on staff with his mother, Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso, and brother, OU hitting coach JT Gasso.
In a school statement, Utah head coach Amy Hogue said, “I am not going to lie, replacing Hannah and hiring a new assistant coach has not been a lot of fun. This is a very important position on our staff so we really did our research on each candidate. DJ rose to the top during our interviews and received a number of positive referrals. After getting to know him through the hiring process, we became convinced he is a ‘hidden gem’. DJ knows what a winning program looks like and the work it takes to be at the top. He is an extremely loyal and hardworking person. I have known his family for 25 years and have a lot of trust in what DJ will bring to Utah and the impact he will have on our program. I cannot wait to get him here with the team and get to work!”
During his collegiate baseball career, Gasso suited up for a trio of schools. He began his career at Hutchinson Community College, later transferring to Bradley, where he spent two years and earned his bachelor’s degree. He played his senior season at the University of Central Oklahoma, batting .303 that season.
Prior to the abrupt cancellation of the 2020 season, the Utah Utes sported a 14-4 overall record and owned a team batting average of .310.
