A head coaching position in the PAC-12 is a rare commodity, and the opening at Cal has its own uniqueness. The Bears are searching for a replacement for Diane Ninemire, who spent decades leading the program, including to the 2002 National Championship. Ninemire retired during the 2020 season due to health reasons, ending her career with more than 1,350 victories to her credit.
The Bears made thirty NCAA tournament appearances under Ninemire, and most recently participated in the Women's College World Series in 2011 and '12.
