The International Olympic Committee has selected Brisbane, Queensland, Australia as the host for the 2032 Summer Olympic Games.
IOC members voted to award the 2032 Games to the Australian city in a 72-5 vote that was held ahead of this week’s Opening Ceremonies in Tokyo. The award means Brisbane will host the Games for the first time in ’32; Australia most recently hosted the Games in Sydney in 2000.
Brisbane in 2032 will follow the 2024 Paris and 2028 Los Angeles Games, awards that were jointly announced in 2017. Brisbane is the third-most populous city in Australia with an estimated population of nearly 2.6 million as of 2020.
Noted in various media reports on Wednesday is that Brisbane officials say that more than 80% of necessary event venues are already in place, some eleven years prior to the 2032 Games’ occurrence.
The award is also good news for softball fans, as Australia boasts one of the most decorated softball national teams in the sport and the sport maintains popularity “down under”. Softball will not be part of the 2024 Paris Games, but there is a pathway for a return in 2028 in Los Angeles. Softball would be in good position to be part of back-to-back Olympic slates, in LA and now in Brisbane, following Wednesday’s announcement.
