Buffalo has removed the interim designation from head coach Mike Ruechel’s title, naming him the program’s full-time head coach.
Ruechel has served in the interim capacity through this season, following the departure of Mike Roberts in August for an assistant coaching position at Louisiana-Lafayette. Ruechel led the Bulls to a 10-32-1 overall record and a 6-10-1 mark in conference play this season.
In a statement released by the university, Buffalo athletic director Mark Alnutt said, “We’re happy with the progress of the softball program under Mike’s leadership and we believe that this is the best decision to continue that upward trend. I have a tremendous amount of confidence in Mike and his staff and the direction that the program is going.”
Prior to his appointment to the interim head coaching position, Ruechel served as the hitting coach on the Bulls’ staff for one season. His previous coaching resume also includes two seasons at Indiana Wesleyan University as the hitting coach, as well as tenures at Judson University, Southeastern Illinois College, and the Lake Erie Crushers.
In addition to naming Ruechel to the full-time position, Buffalo also announced that assistant coaches Jody Hennigar and Cortney Radke would continue to fill out the team’s coaching staff.
