A pair of Big Ten schools have added freshman transfers at the semester break.
Rutgers announced the addition of Taylor Fawcett, a first-year outfielder formerly of Louisiana-Lafayette. Sources confirmed to JWOS that Fawcett entered the NCAA transfer portal on December 5; Rutgers announced her transfer two weeks later. A PGF all-American as a senior in 2019, Fawcett finished her high school career with a .421 batting average, 146 hits, and 133 RBIs during her varsity career at Pinnacle High School.
“We are excited to add Taylor to our already talented team,” said Rutgers head coach Kristen Butler in a press release. “She is the type of player that our staff is wanting to bring ‘To the Banks’ and we look forward to the speed and power at the plate that will enhance our current roster. Not only is Taylor a talented athlete, but an even better student and person. Our team is blessed she chose Rutgers.”
Illinois announced the addition of utility player Brianna Nykaza, who transferred from North Carolina State. Sources confirmed to JWOS that Nykaza had been in the transfer portal for several months, with her name being entered into the portal on September 30th. A .546 hitter during high school, Nykaza finished her varsity career with 249 hits and 194 runs scored, and was part of the Greek National Team that participated in the U22 European Championship in 2018.
“Brianna swings a big bat and will provide immediate depth to our lineup this spring,” Illinois head coach Tyra Perry said in a statement. “She is unique in that she has international playing experience as a key member of the Greek National Team. Brianna was also a top hitter and all-state player at Whitney Young Magnet High School. We are excited to welcome her back home.”
Rutgers and Illinois finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the Big Ten standings during the 2019 season.
