Former Utah backstop Kelly Martinez has transferred to Texas A&M. Martinez left Utah earlier in the fall and originally transferred to Texas; she was seen, at one point, participating in a photo shoot with other incoming Longhorn transfers Miranda Elish and Lauren Burke. Her brief stint at Texas was not mentioned in the Texas A&M news release announcing her addition. Reigning PAC-12 Pitcher of the Year Megan Kleist will not pitch during the 2019 season. In December, Kleist had announced her transfer to Louisiana-Lafayette from Oregon, where she spent the three seasons of her career and earned a pair of all-American honors. On Tuesday, Kleist announced on her Twitter account that she will sit out the 2019 season while completing her degree at Oregon. As noted in her post, sources also confirmed to JWOS that Kleist is still expected to play for the ULL Ragin’ Cajuns, but during the 2020 season as a graduate transfer. After a weeklong tryout in Florida, Team USA has announced their 18-member roster for 2019. Headlining the roster are former Olympic greats Monica Abbott and Cat Osterman, the latter proving successful in her comeback attempt ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games. Abbott played for Team USA in 2018. Both Abbott and Osterman were members of Team USA in 2008, the last time that the sport of softball was played in the Olympic Games, and helped lead the US team to a silver medal in the Beijing Olympics that year. One of the finest players in Kansas softball history, Maggie Hull-Tietz graduated in 2013 as an all-American and the program’s all-time leader in hits, runs, and batting average. In the summer of 2016, she returned to her alma mater as the Director of Operations on Megan Smith’s Jayhawks coaching staff. Bob Guerriero has been named the full-time head coach at St. John’s, according to a university press release issued on Wednesday. Guerriero has served since September of 2018 as the program’s leader on an interim basis, replacing Amy Kvilhaug as head coach upon her retirement. Before being named to the interim position, Guerriero spent six seasons on the Johnnies’ coaching staff as an assistant. He previously spent a dozen years on the coaching staff at Seton Hall, helping lead the Pirates to five Big East conference championships. In the late fall of 2017, Western Illinois announced a head coaching change. Longtime head coach Holly Van Vlymen would be moving into an administrative role in the athletic department and program alum and assistant coach Beth Golitko would be named the interim head coach. Gossett was the Fighting Irish ace for most of her career in South Bend, earning ninety-two career victories. Her wins total ranks third in Fighting Irish program history, while her 819 career strikeouts ranks fourth all-time. The name Yvette Girouard is practically synonymous with the game of softball in the state of Louisiana. The former head coach of both the Southwestern Louisiana (now Louisiana-Lafayette) Ragin’ Cajuns and the LSU Tigers, Girouard is an NFCA Hall of Famer and is also a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Girouard retired from coaching following the 2011 season, but has certainly not disappeared from the softball scene.
