Diane Hobin, who played three sports collegiately at Hofstra and went on to be head softball coach at Stony Brook, passed away on September 27 after a battle with cancer.
A 1996 Hofstra graduate, Hobin competed in basketball, softball, and field hockey for the Pride during her career. She ranks third in career assists on the basketball court, and tenth all-time in the same category on the field hockey pitch.
On the softball diamond, Hobin helped lead the Pride – then known as the Flying Dutchwomen – to a pair of NCAA tournament berths, in 1993 and 1995, and a conference championship in ’93. She ended her playing career with a .345 batting average and 98 runs scored, and was a two-time all-Region selection. She was a 2009 inductee into the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame.
Following her graduation, Hobin spent four years at Stony Brook as head softball coach and assistant to the athletic director. During her four years leading the Seawolves’ program, Hobin guided the team through the transition into Division I and posted a 35-107-1 overall record during her tenure.
After leaving Stony Brook for a position in the private sector, Hobin went on to serve on the University of Illinois women’s basketball staff and in a role with the US Junior National Girls Basketball program.
