Humboldt State player Evelyn Andrews has passed away after a battle with cancer. She was 20 years old.

In a moving tribute, Humboldt State memorialized Andrews in an article entitled Never Fought Alone. In the article, it details Andrews’ love of softball as well as her fight against cancer; after finding a softball-sized tumor between her heart and lungs prior to her senior year of high school, Andrews underwent chemotherapy treatments and went into remission, never missing a step as she stepped back on the diamond that spring to finish her high school varsity softball career at Davis High.

Andrews redshirted the 2019 season, though she made the dean’s list academically in her first semester. She was named an NFCA Scholar-Athlete in ’19, as well. In September of 2019, Andrews was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia, a “secondary blood cancer that [was]a direct result of the treatment for her lymphoma in 2017,” and later passed away from complications of AML.

A memorial service will be held by the Humboldt State athletic department on February 23 on the university’s campus. And as the HSU article beautifully noted, “For the record, Evelyn died cancer free. Ev 2, Cancer 0.”
