Iowa State star Sami Williams will return to the Cyclones program in 2021 with the NCAA’s extended eligibility waiver.
Williams, who was a senior during the abbreviated 2020 campaign, released a letter through the school, confirming her plans to return for a second chance at a full senior season. “Returning to the field with my teammates for one final season is a dream come true,” Williams wrote at one point in the letter. “In times like this, I am reminded how fortunate I am to play for a university that truly values the student-athlete experience like Iowa State does.”
One of the best players in ISU program history, Williams owns a number of single-season and career records in both the Cyclone and Big 12 record books. During the 2019 season, she set four program single-season records, including for hits (82); runs (59); doubles (25); and home runs (17).
A two-time Academic All-American, Williams owns a pair of first-team all-conference nods and was an all-region first-team selection in 2017. She was also named the Big 12 Softball Student-Athlete of the Year.
Williams is the second Cyclone senior to announce a return for the 2021 campaign, along with teammate Logan Schaben, who made the announcement earlier in the week.
