Who is she? Shannon Bustillos, a former catcher and power hitter for the Maryland Terrapins.
What is she known for? One of the top players at her position during her time as a Terp, Bustillos also ended her playing career as one of the best hitters in Maryland program history. At the time of her graduation, she held the all-time program home run record and still holds the career RBI mark. Named a second-team all-conference honoree in her senior season, Bustillos led her team in home runs in three of her four years with the Terrapins.
Here’s something interesting… As noted, Bustillos holds the Maryland program record for career RBIs with 153. She broke the previous program record in her final regular-season game, against Michigan State in 2015 when a three-run home run gave her sole possession of first place all-time in the statistical category.
Quotable quote: [as to lessons and skills from playing softball from which she has since benefitted]“Perseverance… being able to take challenges and overcome them, instead of complaining about them. There have been a lot of times post-college that I have been challenged in ways [that]I never expected, but softball has taught me that you have to control the controllables and push through it.”
What’s she up to now? After spending a short time playing professionally overseas following her collegiate career, a time that included winning a German National Championship, Shannon returned stateside and ultimately elected to attend law school. She is currently attending law school, with hopes of eventually pursuing a career in criminal law.
