North Carolina Central has named Cat Tarvin as the program’s interim head coach. Tarvin takes over for Vashion Johnson, who “resigned to pursue another professional opportunity,” according to a school release.
Johnson spent four seasons as the head coach at NCCU, having been hired in the fall of 2016. He guided the Lady Eagles to 23 wins during the 2019 season, a program record at the Division I level. The squad pulled off an upset against in-state ACC foe North Carolina to close the ’19 campaign.
“We are thrilled to appoint Coach Cat Tarvin to serve as interim head coach,” NCCU athletic director Ingrid Wicker McCree said in a statement. “She is ready and poised to lead our young women and the softball program.”
Tarvin has served as the Lady Eagles’ assistant coach for the last three seasons, working with the team’s pitching staff. Under her tutelage, a Lady Eagles pitcher tied the program’s Division I single-season wins record in both 2018 (Courtney Mirabella) and 2019 (Kiara Hurley).
Prior to joining the NCCU staff, Tarvin spent one season on staff at Emory University. As a player, she began her career at Kennesaw State before transferring to Presbyterian. She earned second-team all-Big South honors as a senior for the Blue Hose.
