TRENDING NOW: NCAA TRANSFER TRACKER / COLLEGE COACHING TRACKER
Wofford College, a member of the Division I Southern Conference (the “SoCon”), has announced intentions to begin a softball program and has named a head coach.
According to a news release on July 22nd, the Terriers will enroll their first recruiting class this fall and will begin play with the 2024 season. A softball facility is also currently under construction.
Mark Line, a veteran of more than three decades in the Wofford athletic program, most recently served as an athletic administrator for the Terriers and has been named as the program’s inaugural softball coach. Line spent a decade as the Wofford baseball coach from 1986-95 and most recently held the Deputy Athletic Director title since 2017. Line was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
“When starting a sports program, it is important to get it right,” Wofford athletic director Richard Johnson said in a school statement. “We expect to be competitive in the top tier of teams in the Southern Conference. We have turned to Mark Line, who understands the culture of the college better than almost anyone, to lay the foundation for the program. Mark is passionate about Wofford and is someone I entrust completely for this important role.”
The addition of Wofford to the SoCon’s softball ranks will now put the league at 80% participation in the sport. Of the conference’s ten member teams, only two – The Citadel and Virginia Military Institute – now do not have a softball program.
