Former Marshall head coach Jen Steele has been hired as the new head coach at Delaware, the Blue Hens announced in a press release on Monday.
Steele spent the 2018 season at Marshall, her sole campaign at the helm of the Thundering Herd, before departing under suspicious circumstances earlier in the summer. Steele’s Herd squad finished the ’18 season with an overall record of 25-29-1, and a 13-9-1 mark in Conference USA matchups. The Herd finished third in the conference’s eastern division.
Early in July, it was announced that Steele would not be returning to Marshall. No reason was given for her departure, though it happened with such suddenness and caused such surprise that many were caught off-guard by the announcement. The Herd would go on to hire former Kansas coach Megan Smith as their new leader.
Before joining the Herd in Huntington, Steele spent three seasons as the head coach at Jacksonville, posting an 86-83 record during her tenure with the Dolphins. The squad posted an ASun conference record of 26-31 under Steele’s leadership.
A Longwood alum, Steele’s coaching resume also includes a stint as head coach at Division III Randolph College and assistant coaching positions at Longwood and George Mason.
At Delaware, Steele takes over a Blue Hens program that posted an 18-31 overall record in the 2018 season. The squad went 8-13 in conference play, finishing sixth overall in the Colonial Athletic Association standings.
