Jamie Pinkerton has been hired as the new head coach at Iowa State.
The second head coaching hire in fourteen months for the Cyclones, Pinkerton succeeds Jamie Trachsel at the helm of the program after Trachsel accepted the head coaching position at Minnesota.
Pinkerton had been head coach at Montana since 2013, building the program from scratch and leading the Grizzlies through three seasons of play. In 2017, Pinkerton’s squad won their first-ever Big Sky conference tournament and advanced to play in the NCAA tournament, an achievement that helped earn Pinkerton the conference’s Coach of the Year award. It was the second such award in three seasons.
Prior to Montana, Pinkerton had been an assistant at Iowa State for four years. His coaching resume also includes a stint as head coach at Arkansas; time as an assistant and head coach at Tulsa; and assistant coaching positions at Virginia and Louisiana-Monroe in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Iowa State finished the 2017 season with a record of 23-35, including a 6-12 mark in conference play. The squad went 0-3 at the Big 12 Championship, enduring shutout losses to Oklahoma State, Baylor, and Texas Tech. The season was, nevertheless, a marked improvement over the 2016 campaign, when the Cyclones won just a single conference game.
